Stuff the Bus Seeks Drop Off Locations - Adams County

For Immediate Release – July 5, 2017

Contact:  Angie Loucks, United Way of Inner Wisconsin and Stuff the Bus Committee member, 715-421-0390.

ADAMS-FRIENDSHIP, WI – The Stuff the Bus Committee of Adams County is currently seeking drop off locations for its Ninth Annual Stuff the Bus Collection.  Businesses and organizations can begin holding school supply drives from July 17, 2017 until August 11.  On August 11th, 9:00 am, a bus donated by Kobussen Buses Ltd. will depart from the Adams-Friendship Area School District Office and drive to each location to pick up school supplies and “Stuff the Bus!”

Donated school supplies will be sorted by volunteers at the Adams County Community Center, assembled into backpacks and finally distributed to students in need on August 15, 2017 from 9am – 4:30pm.

To become a drop off location, simply contact the Adams County Community Services office at 608-339-4544.  Drop off locations need to place their collection boxes in a prominent location, provide signage, and promote their school supply drives.  They can be open to the public; or have them available only to members/employees.

Items that are especially needed include:  24 count crayons, pencils, pencil pouches, pens (red, blue or black), colored pencils, washable markers, watercolor paints, pointed scissors, wide ruled paper (spiral bound), glue sticks, supply boxes, pocket folders, filler paper (wide ruled), 3 ring binders (1inch size), rulers, scientific calculators, and backpacks.

Monetary donations and gift certificates are also accepted.  Please write checks to “Stuff the Bus” and mail/deliver to the Adams-Friendship Schools Administrative Building, 201 W. 6th St., Friendship, WI 53934.

Families who wish to apply for school supplies can pick up an application at the Adams County Health and Human Services office from July 17 to August 11, 2017.

About the Stuff the School Bus

“Stuff the Bus” is a collaborative effort of several local non-profit and government agencies, including the Adams County Community Services Program, Adams County Health and Human Services, Adams-Friendship Area School District, the Salvation Army, and United Way of Inner Wisconsin.

Every year, the Stuff the Bus Committee asks the community to “stuff a school bus” with donations of school supplies.   Later, the school supplies are distributed to local students in need.  All families who live in Adams County and who are in financial need are eligible; but need to fill out an application at the Adams County Health and Human Services office, or contact the Adams County Community Services Program.

Children’s Hospital of WI Programs and Resources - Marshfield

Free, discounted health screenings at Mile Bluff Medical Center in Mauston

In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, it’s important to take control of your health.  Knowing your specific risks for developing heart disease, diabetes and hearing loss can help you be proactive in making healthier life choices.  Knowing your levels of cholesterol and blood pressure, and keeping those under control, may even help to add a few more years to your life.

If you would like to learn some steps you can take to better control your wellness, be sure to attend the upcoming health fair at Mile Bluff Medical Center in Mauston.  The event will be held on Thursday, April 13 from 7 to 11 am.

Free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings will be available, along with the opportunity to discuss specific risks for developing diabetes and heart disease with Mile Bluff’s healthcare professionals. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and win door prizes.

If you would like to have a total cholesterol test performed with no fasting required, you may do so for $10. You also have the option to have a lipid profile worked up for only $20; this test requires 12 hours of fasting.

In addition to these services, a member from Mile Bluff’s audiology team will be available from 8 to 11 am to perform free hearing tests. They will be able to tell you of any specific risks you may have for developing hearing loss.

Once your tests are completed, Mile Bluff’s healthcare professionals will review your results with you, and will provide tips on how to reduce your risks for developing diabetes, heart disease and hearing loss. If areas of concern are found through these screenings, resources will be provided to help you with your needs, and all results will be sent to your primary care provider.

You will also have the opportunity to meet with a Mile Bluff pharmacist to discuss any medication questions you may have. These free consultations are by appointment only.

Insurance is not needed to take advantage of the benefits these health screenings have to offer. The information you receive from these tests, along with the educational tools you will be given, are important steps in positively impacting your health.  Appointments are required for all services, so call 608-847-1845 to reserve your spot today!
