Let Mile Bluff Medical Center help you prevent winter falls

The snow may look pretty, and everyone likes the holidays, but for a lot of older adults, winter can be a scary season due to the increased risk of falling on snow or ice. The chances of being seriously injured in a fall increase with age, no matter what the weather is like outside. Thankfully, there are things you can do to help prevent falls this winter, besides moving south.

Recently, Mile Bluff Medical Center in Mauston hosted a Falls Prevention Awareness Day event that introduced individuals to resources that are available to them locally. Those in attendance had the opportunity to speak with a number of healthcare professionals, answer questionnaires, and participate in activities.
“Many who have fallen could have avoided injury if they would have sought out help when they first noticed issues with their balance and stability,” stated Karen Patton, Mile Bluff - Hess Home Health physical therapist.  “Studies show that a combination of interventions can significantly reduce and prevent falls among older adults, and at Mile Bluff we can help with most of these preventative measures, no matter what the season.”

During the winter months, there are a few extra precautions that older individuals should take into consideration to help reduce and prevent falls.

Reduce & prevent winter falls:
Check the traction on your footwear. Shoes with better traction will grip the ground better.
Keep your salt and shovel in the house. That way, you don’t have to walk in the snow or on an icy sidewalk to get the salt and shovel out of your shed.
Check outdoor railings. Make sure they are sturdy enough to catch you if you slip.
Ask for help. If you have to walk outside in icy conditions, find a steady arm to guide you.
Have a plan. Think about where you are going and ask yourself, “If I fell here, what would I do?”
Slow down. Allow extra time to get where you are going so you don’t have to rush.
Strengthen your legs. If you slip, strong leg muscles can help catch you before you hit the ground. The best thing to do to strengthen your legs is to use them more and exercise regularly.

These fall prevention tips can help reduce your chances of falling this winter, so you can enjoy the holidays a little more.

Falls don’t have to be a part of your future.  Learn what you can do today, to help keep you independent in your home tomorrow and into the future.  To learn about other preventative options, contact Hess Home Health at 608-847-1480. The healthcare professionals at Mile Bluff are ready to help you stay on your feet this holiday season.
